The State was then re-released in 2000 by EMI and Roadrunner Records. Nickelback signed a record deal with EMI and Roadrunner Records. The following album The State was recorded in 1998 and was released as an independent record the same year. It did not chart and was only played on local radio stations. "Fly" was released on Hesher and Curb and was the first single produced by Nickelback. In the same year, Nickelback recorded their first full-length album Curb. Nickelback's first release was a seven-track EP called Hesher in 1996. The band performed covers of songs from Led Zeppelin and Metallica. The band was formed in the early 1990s as a cover band called the "Village Idiots" by Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger, and Brandon Kroeger. The contract includes recordings, touring, merchandise and other rights. In July 2008, the band signed with Live Nation for three touring and album cycles, with an option for a fourth cycle. The band is signed to EMI in Canada and Roadrunner Records for the rest of the world. Its name originates from the nickel in change that band member Mike Kroeger gave customers at his Starbucks job, he would frequently say, "Here's your nickel back". The band is now based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The band has released seven albums: "Curb" (1996), "The State" (1998), "Silver Side Up" (2001), "The Long Road" (2003), "All the Right Reasons", "Dark Horse" (2008), "Here and Now" (2011) and "Feed The Machine" (2017). The band's original drummer, Brandon Kroeger, left the group in 1997, and was replaced first by Mitch Guidon from 1997 to 1998 and then Ryan Vikedal from 1998 to 2005. The band consists of Chad Kroeger (vocals, guitar), Ryan Peake (guitar, vocals), Mike Kroeger (bass) and Daniel Adair (drums). Nickelback ranks as the 11th best selling music act of the 2000s, and places as the 2nd best selling foreign act in the US behind The Beatles for the 2000s. Nickelback is one of the most commercially successful Canadian groups, having sold 30 million records worldwide. Despite incredibly stupid and cringe-worthy lyrics such as the single-entendre “She’s gonna lick my pistol clean” and the TMI line “ was lying when I told her that I’m only gonna lick her tonight,” the music and vocals together really sell the dangerousness of the bar.Nickelback is a rock band which formed in Hanna, Alberta, Canada in 1995. The best song on the album is “Midnight Queen,” an “Appetite for Destruction” style rocker in which Kroeger sings about having sex with the waitress of a really dangerous bar. The other members of Nickelback are all serviceable when they play rhythm, but when Kroeger takes the lead guitar (and effects pedal) for a solo, you should seek cover. It gets all fast and messy when he sings about girls, but it slows down and becomes dramatic on the ballads. The music that backs Kroeger displays the variety of emotions that he needs to develop. The exception is “Kiss It Goodbye,” a song about the phoniness of Hollywood in which Kroeger inexplicably sounds like Rob Zombie. It works when he talks about sex machines and midnight queens, but when he tries to reach out to a lonely soul in “Lullaby,” you’ll need him to tell you that “I’m scared as hell” to figure out that he’s scared as hell.
It doesn’t even matter what Kroeger sings about, because he approaches every topic with the same sense of conviction in his voice. Thankfully, Kroeger has dropped that sound in the decade between then and “Here and Now.” Instead, he’s taken to writing hard rock songs about drinking in bars, meeting girls in bars, not being friend-zoned and for some reason, how we should be increasing our awareness of global affairs. After I listened to “Here and Now” the first time, I gave 2001’s “Silver Side Up” a spin, in which frontman Chad Kroeger sounds like he’s been possessed by a Kurt Cobain who lost all the integrity he had and decided to make radio-friendly unit shifters.
I should take this time to note that, until last week, I had only listened to a few Nickelback songs. I doubt that it could pull off a feat like that, however, since it lacks any sort of ambition whatsoever. I have no doubt that their newest album, “Here and Now,” will repeat this success, even if it were to murder every first-born child in San Francisco. Nickelback was ranked as the seventh biggest artist, the highest ranking rock band on the list (Creed was the second highest, at #18). Nickelback was the band of the last decade, according to the Billboard charts.
